Wigs: Real or Synthetic Hair?

Updated: Mar 28

I am a first time wig wearer, would I be best buying a fibre hair wig to start off with?

It is normally recommended for your first wig to be fibre hair due to it being less expensive compared to a real hair wig. They are more low maintenance and it gives you the chance to decide whether a wig is the right option for you without the added cost of a real hair wig.

Can I use heat on and style my wig?

On human hair wigs, yes you can. Like our own hair, real hair wigs can be styled using the same appliances: hairdryers, curling tongs, hooded dryers, ceramic irons and heated rollers. But it is advised that with the lighter shades of blonde, not to exceed 180° on the temperature gauge. Like with our own hair, it is always advised to use as little heat as possible as it can affect the hair. With flexi-fibre wigs, they can still be styled but only with temperature-controlled appliances, of heat usually up to 140°. Finally, heat should never be used on synthetic hair as it will burn the fibres.

What happens if I go out in the rain?

If you were to curl your real hair wig and then go out in the rain, the wig would revert back to its natural state. If your synthetic wig comes with curls or a wave and you were to go out in the rain, once dried the style will revert back to the curls or wave. However, gradually with time the curls will drop and become looser.

We’ve created this table below to help you in your decision of which hair type would be best suited to you.

Something else to remember is that if you were to purchase a high quality synthetic wig, it can be hard to even distinguish between that and a real hair wig. Whereas, if you were to buy a budget synthetic wig, there may be an unnatural shine to it.

plays a big part in the quality and comfort of a wig too.
